Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Death Threat to Karachi University Professor

Police arrested Konain Gohar Ali Shah after Professor Dr Arif Khan Saqi, chairman of the University of Karachi’s Department of Islamic Learning, reported an alleged death threat.

According to police, Sachal police registered a case against Konain under Section 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 25-D of the Telegraph Act.

The case followed an alleged WhatsApp call that the professor received on September 10.

Professor Reports Alleged Death Threat

Professor Saqi told police that Konain, along with his guards, had allegedly assaulted him on September 8.

A separate case over the alleged assault of the professor and his nephew was also registered at Sachal police station.

According to the complaint, Konain called the professor on WhatsApp at about 2pm on September 10.

The caller allegedly demanded that Saqi withdraw the assault case.

However, the professor refused.

Police said Konain then allegedly became angry and threatened to kill him. He also allegedly warned the professor of serious consequences if he did not withdraw the case.

Saqi subsequently approached the police and requested legal action.

Suspect Arrested Hours After Complaint

Police registered the death-threat case and arrested the nominated suspect later that night.

Officials said investigators took Konain into custody for further questioning.

Police sources said Konain and his associates were already facing the separate assault case involving Professor Saqi and his nephew.

The accused had obtained pre-arrest bail in that case, according to the sources.

Meanwhile, investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and the earlier assault case.

Court Grants Three-Day Physical Remand

Later, a Malir judicial magistrate handed Konain over to police on a three-day physical remand in the death-threat case.

Sachal police produced the accused before the court and requested his physical remand.

Police told the court that investigators needed to question the suspect and recover the mobile phone allegedly used to issue the threats.

The complainant’s lawyer also appeared before the court.

The lawyer told the court that Konain allegedly threatened Professor Saqi after securing interim bail in the earlier assault case.

He further requested action against the accused’s alleged associates in the assault case.

The lawyer also said police needed to recover a weapon allegedly linked to the main assault case.

Police are continuing their investigation into both cases. The allegations have not been independently established in court.
