Teach the World Foundation Showcases Solar-Powered Digital MicroSchool on International Literacy Day 2026

Teach the World Foundation (TTWF) showcased its solar-powered Digital MicroSchool model at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, to mark International Literacy Day 2026.

The interactive classroom formed part of a flagship event organised by the Directorate of Literacy and Non-Formal Education, School Education & Literacy Department, Government of Sindh.

The event brought together government officials, development partners, educationists and civil society organisations. It focused on scalable approaches to inclusive and sustainable education under this year’s theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”

TTWF recreated a functional digital non-formal learning space for the event. Visitors saw how out-of-school children can develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills through tablets, interactive learning content and trained local facilitators.

The Foundation powered the entire setup through a mobile solar energy unit. The demonstration highlighted how digital education can operate in communities with limited or unreliable electricity.

Digital Learning for Underserved Communities

TTWF President Arshad Anis stressed the need for practical education solutions in underserved areas.

“With millions of out-of-school children across Pakistan, we cannot afford to rely on traditional solutions alone,” Anis said.

He also welcomed the Sindh School Education Department’s literacy initiative. He said such platforms can help turn education ideas into practical solutions.

According to Anis, the Digital MicroSchool model provides a scalable way to take quality learning directly to underserved communities. He said the model can also help children move towards formal schooling.

Solar Power Supports Off-Grid Education

The Digital MicroSchool model uses compact community spaces equipped with tablets and adaptive learning software. The technology aims to make lessons more engaging for young learners.

TTWF recruits facilitators from local communities and trains them to support students during lessons. Flexible learning shifts also allow one location to serve multiple groups of children.

The solar-powered system addresses one of the major barriers to digital education in underserved areas: unreliable electricity.

By combining renewable energy with digital learning tools, TTWF aims to create a sustainable model for basic education in communities that lack adequate infrastructure.

Tackling Pakistan’s Education Challenge

TTWF says its model responds to Pakistan’s continuing education crisis and the large number of children who remain outside the formal school system.

The Foundation works to improve foundational literacy and numeracy among out-of-school children in underserved communities.

The organisation also works with public institutions and development partners to expand access to basic education.

The International Literacy Day demonstration in Karachi highlighted how community-based digital classrooms can support wider literacy efforts while reducing dependence on conventional infrastructure.
