Police used water cannons on Monday to disperse thousands of young protesters who marched toward the state legislature in India’s eastern state of Jharkhand. The demonstrators were protesting alleged irregularities in the state’s civil services recruitment examinations.
The Jharkhand protests began on July 25. Students and unemployed young people have accused authorities of failing to prevent wrongdoing in public service examinations.
The protesters have raised allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities.
They are demanding major changes to the state’s examination system. They have also called for the cancellation of certain tests and an investigation by India’s federal police.
The demonstrations intensified after thousands of protesters gathered at a stadium in Ranchi, the state capital.
On Monday, protesters marched toward the state legislature under heavy security. Some demonstrators climbed over police barricades while carrying placards and waving the Indian national flag.
Police used water cannons to push the protesters back as the march moved toward the legislature.
The protests have created growing pressure on the state government, which is led by a regional political party opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.
The state government has held talks with representatives of the protesters.

Officials said most of the protesters’ demands had been accepted. The government also said it remained willing to hold further discussions.
The protesters, however, continued their march, calling for stronger action over alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.
The dispute comes amid wider concerns about examination integrity and employment opportunities in India.
Young people have increasingly taken to the streets over allegations of corruption and paper leaks in competitive examinations.
The Jharkhand demonstrations follow weeks of youth-led protests in New Delhi.
Those protests were linked to allegations surrounding the national medical entrance examination. The controversy eventually contributed to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month.
The protests have highlighted growing frustration among students and unemployed young people over limited employment opportunities.
For many young Indians, government examinations offer an important route into stable employment. Allegations of leaked papers or manipulated recruitment processes can therefore have serious consequences for candidates who spend years preparing for competitive tests.
Jharkhand is among India’s poorer states and faces significant employment challenges.
The protesters say examination authorities must ensure greater transparency and accountability.
They are also seeking an examination system that prevents leaks and protects candidates from unfair practices.
The state government’s willingness to continue talks could help ease tensions, but protesters are demanding concrete measures rather than assurances.
The demonstrations have also added to wider political pressure over India’s competitive examination system.
With large numbers of young people competing for limited government jobs, allegations of irregularities can quickly trigger mass protests.
The Jharkhand movement now represents another test for authorities seeking to balance public pressure with the need to maintain confidence in the state’s recruitment process.
