KARACHI: Karachi University entered a new administrative phase on Tuesday after NED University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail Jokhio officially assumed additional charge as the institution’s acting vice chancellor.

The appointment follows the completion of Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi’s four-year tenure as vice chancellor on July 27, 2026. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah assigned the additional responsibility to Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail through a notification issued on July 24. He will serve as acting vice chancellor until the provincial government appoints a permanent head for the university.

After formally taking charge, Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail addressed faculty members, officers and university staff. He said his immediate priority is to develop sustainable solutions for the institution’s challenges instead of relying on temporary measures. He stressed that the administration would identify the root causes of problems and implement long-term reforms to strengthen the university.

More than 100 words into his first address, Karachi University remained the focus of Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail’s vision. He urged teachers, officers and employees to work together with a shared sense of responsibility to improve academic standards, administrative efficiency and the university’s national reputation.

Acting VC Outlines Reform Agenda

Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail said teamwork, professional commitment and cooperation are essential for achieving institutional success.

He also urged university employees to maintain punctuality and discipline, saying these values are necessary to ensure uninterrupted academic and administrative operations.

The acting vice chancellor emphasized that better governance and stronger collaboration would help improve the university’s overall performance.

Distinguished Academic Leader

Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail is widely recognized as one of Pakistan’s leading engineering academics and higher education reformers.

He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK) and the Institution of Engineers Pakistan. He has more than 25 years of experience in higher education leadership, research management, accreditation and international academic collaboration.

Track Record at NED University

During his tenure at NED University of Engineering and Technology, Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail introduced several strategic reforms that strengthened academic standards, research funding, institutional transparency and global partnerships.

He also played a key role in establishing an NED constituent college in Tharparkar, expanding access to engineering education for students from underserved communities.

Before becoming vice chancellor of NED University, he served as Pro Vice Chancellor, dean of multiple faculties and chairman of the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.

National and International Recognition

Professor Dr Muhammad Tufail earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing Systems) from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.

He has served on the Governing Body of the Pakistan Engineering Council and contributed to engineering accreditation, curriculum development and higher education policy.

His research spans advanced materials, manufacturing systems, sustainable fuels, additive manufacturing, biomedical alloys and supply chain quality management. He has also led internationally funded research projects worth millions of euros.

His achievements have earned him several prestigious honors, including the Pakistan Engineering Council’s Engineers Excellence Award (Academia & Research) 2023, the Government of Sindh’s High Performers Award 2023 and the Wall of Fame Award 2018.
