Karachi: KWSSIP gained fresh momentum on Monday after Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and World Bank Country Director Bolorma Amgaabazar agreed to fast-track Karachi’s water supply and sewerage upgrade. The new roadmap aims to modernize aging infrastructure and improve essential services for millions of residents.

The meeting at the Chief Minister’s House reviewed progress on the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project. Officials examined implementation challenges and approved measures to speed up construction and improve coordination.

Safe Drinking Water Remains the Top Priority

Senior officials attended the meeting, including Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah. A World Bank delegation also participated with experts in water supply, sanitation, procurement, environmental management and social development.

The KWSSIP will provide safe drinking water to nearly two million Karachi residents through major infrastructure upgrades. Chief Minister Shah said the government considers clean drinking water and a modern sewerage system among its highest priorities.

He said Karachi needs a stronger water infrastructure network to support its rapidly growing population and future development.

Water Quality Testing to Begin

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said workers have relocated chlorination plants to designated sites. The facilities are now becoming operational. He added that authorities expect to begin water quality testing on July 30 to improve public health and service reliability.

Chief Minister Shah instructed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to complete the remaining work without delay. He also ordered officials to follow project deadlines closely.

Infrastructure and Governance Reforms

Officials reviewed several long-standing problems in Karachi’s water sector. They discussed aging pipelines, water leakages, weak distribution systems and limited wastewater treatment capacity.

World Bank officials said infrastructure upgrades alone cannot solve these issues. They urged stronger governance, better financial management and improved operational efficiency within public institutions.

Chief Minister Shah agreed that institutional reforms must continue alongside infrastructure development. He reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to delivering sustainable and efficient water services.

Fast-Track Roadmap Approved

The meeting concluded with approval of a fast-track implementation roadmap. The plan sets clear milestones, strengthens coordination among stakeholders and improves monitoring to accelerate one of Karachi’s most important infrastructure projects.
