US Envoy Says Intelligence Behind Israeli Strike on Syrian Base Was Wrong

US Ambassador to Ankara and Syria-Iraq Special Envoy Tom Barrack said Israeli strike intelligence behind an attack on a military air base in northern Syria was incorrect.

Barrack said he did not know the precise reason for the Israeli operation. However, he explained the information that had been shared with Washington before the attack.

Israel Received Intelligence About Türkiye

According to Barrack, Israel received intelligence suggesting that Türkiye could be moving military assets to the abandoned Abu al-Duhur Military Air Base in eastern Idlib province.

Israel then shared the information with the United States, prompting Washington to review the intelligence.

“We consulted our intelligence agencies, and the answer we received was that this claim was not true,” Barrack said in a social media post.

The US envoy added that there may have been a miscommunication between the Israeli military, Mossad and the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US and Türkiye Were Not Informed

Barrack stressed that neither Washington nor Ankara received advance notice of the Israeli attack.

He also praised Türkiye’s armed forces, describing the Turkish army as strong and well-equipped.

The comments came after Israeli warplanes struck the abandoned Abu al-Duhur Military Air Base in northern Syria.

The Israeli operation has raised questions about the intelligence used to justify the attack and the communication between the countries involved.

Netanyahu Office Cites Turkish Activity

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his office had claimed that Turkish soldiers were attempting to establish a presence at the base.

According to the Israeli position, Turkish military personnel were allegedly deploying installations and moving southward.

Barrack’s comments directly challenge the intelligence assessment behind that claim.

The US envoy said Washington’s intelligence agencies found no evidence supporting the information that Türkiye was moving military assets to the site.

Israeli Jets Target Abandoned Air Base

Israeli warplanes carried out multiple strikes on the Abu al-Duhur Military Air Base in eastern Idlib province.

A Syrian official said Israeli aircraft conducted eight attacks on the facility.

The strikes reportedly targeted the runway and an inactive structure inside a hangar.

No immediate information was available on casualties or injuries resulting from the attack.

The incident adds another layer to the complex security situation in Syria, where regional and international powers continue to monitor military movements and strategic sites.
