The commission was established by the US Congress in 2021 as an independent body to examine US decisions concerning the Afghanistan war from June 2001 to August 2021.
Field Marshal Munir shared Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the conflict, according to ISPR.
He also highlighted the challenges Pakistan faced during the prolonged US engagement in Afghanistan.
The army chief stressed the importance of incorporating a regional perspective when assessing the conflict.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s experience in examining the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the war.
The discussions provided an opportunity for the visiting delegation to hear Pakistan’s perspective on the conflict and its regional consequences.
The United States launched its military intervention in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The conflict continued for two decades before US forces completed their withdrawal in August 2021.
The withdrawal marked the end of the US military presence after nearly 20 years of war.
The conflict resulted in significant military and civilian casualties.
According to figures cited by the supplied report, around 800,000 US servicemembers served in Afghanistan during the war. About 2,238 US servicemembers died, while nearly 21,000 were wounded.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has also documented tens of thousands of civilian deaths and injuries during the conflict.
The Afghanistan War Commission’s review covers US decisions and actions during the conflict.
Its work includes examining the strategic, diplomatic and military dimensions of the US engagement.
Pakistan’s role remains an important part of the regional context surrounding the war.
The meeting with Field Marshal Munir therefore provided the commission with an opportunity to hear Pakistan’s assessment of the conflict and its longer-term security implications.
The commission’s broader review is expected to examine the decisions that shaped the US intervention, its conduct over two decades and the circumstances surrounding the final withdrawal.
