Stan Wawrinka Bids Farewell to Tennis After Final Match in Basel

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka played the final match of his career on Tuesday. He said goodbye to home fans in Basel after losing to Czech player Jiri Lehecka.

Lehecka won the Swiss Indoors match 7-5, 7-6(2). Wawrinka had announced his retirement last year. He planned to leave professional tennis at the end of the 2026 season.

The 41-year-old enjoyed a remarkable 24-year professional career. He won his first Grand Slam title at the 2014 Australian Open. There, he defeated Rafael Nadal in the final.

Wawrinka claimed two more major titles in the following years. He beat Novak Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final. He then defeated Djokovic again in the 2016 US Open final.

Speaking to the ATP website, Wawrinka reflected on the values that shaped his career.

“For me, all I wanted in my career was to give everything, to have no regrets, to always fight, to always give 100% in every match — out of respect for myself, for the opponent, for the tournament, for the fans, for everybody,” Wawrinka said.

He added that this approach had guided him throughout his career.

“That was always the most important thing for more than 20 years, and that’s the only way you can leave the sport: without any regrets.”

Wawrinka won 16 ATP titles during his career. He reached a career-high world ranking of number three in 2014.

His achievements also included Olympic gold. He partnered fellow Swiss star Roger Federer to win the men’s doubles title at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In 2014, Wawrinka also helped Switzerland win its first Davis Cup title. The victory added another major achievement to his career.

His farewell in Basel marks the end of a memorable tennis journey. Wawrinka leaves the sport with three Grand Slam titles, 16 ATP titles and a legacy of determination on the court.
