Space AI took another step forward after Chinese company Shanghai Xingshu Tiansuan Space Technology launched the first group of satellites for a planned orbital computing network that will eventually include 1,000 satellites.

The announcement coincided with the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where Chinese President Xi Jinping promoted China as a leading force in global AI governance.

The company unveiled the satellite launch during a week that featured several artificial intelligence announcements linked to the conference.

The project aims to process data directly in space instead of transmitting large volumes of raw information back to Earth. Satellites will analyse the data in orbit and send only the final results to ground stations.

Developers say this approach can reduce latency, lower bandwidth demands and improve the efficiency of applications such as Earth observation and distributed AI computing.

China continues to expand investment in space-based computing through several projects.

Companies including Zhongke Tiansuan and the Three-Body Computing Constellation, led by Zhejiang Lab, are developing large-scale orbital computing networks expected to expand over the coming years.

The announcement also highlights growing global competition in space-based artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is developing a similar space computing initiative following its full stock merger with xAI in February 2026. The merger valued the combined companies at nearly $1.25 trillion.

Musk has argued that space-based computing centres could overcome the energy consumption and cooling challenges that increasingly limit the expansion of AI infrastructure on Earth.

As countries and technology companies invest heavily in artificial intelligence, orbital computing is emerging as a potential solution for processing vast amounts of data more efficiently while reducing pressure on terrestrial data centres.
