Sindh development is gaining momentum through major investments in roads, housing, electricity and irrigation, according to Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who said the provincial government’s projects demonstrated progress beyond official claims.

Memon said Sindh’s development programme for the 2025-26 fiscal year had been allocated Rs1.018 trillion and covered 3,642 schemes across different sectors.

In a statement, the senior minister said the size of the development budget and the breadth of projects reflected the provincial government’s priorities and its focus on improving infrastructure and public services.

Thousands of Projects Completed

According to Memon, the Sindh government has constructed 5,636 kilometres of roads and completed 1,460 development schemes over the past five years.

He said the progress could be measured not only through budget allocations but also through improvements in facilities and services available to residents across the province.

The minister pointed to healthcare and the provision of basic amenities as areas where the provincial government had made efforts that had also received international recognition.

Major Housing Initiative for Flood Victims

Housing remains one of the largest components of Sindh’s rehabilitation efforts following devastating floods.

Memon said the provincial government was working on the construction of 2.1 million permanent homes for families affected by floods, describing the initiative as unprecedented in the country’s relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The housing programme is intended to provide affected families with permanent shelter rather than temporary assistance, making it one of the most significant reconstruction initiatives undertaken in the province.

Thar Coal Adds Power to National Grid

The minister also highlighted Sindh’s growing role in Pakistan’s energy sector.

He said 3,240 megawatts of electricity generated through the Thar coal project was being supplied to consumers across Pakistan through the national grid.

Sindh has also expanded its renewable-energy portfolio, with wind and solar projects contributing to the country’s electricity system.

The development of Thar’s energy resources has positioned the province as an important part of Pakistan’s efforts to expand domestic power generation and reduce dependence on imported energy sources.

Irrigation Projects Aim to Save Water

Irrigation infrastructure has also featured prominently in the provincial development programme.

Memon said canal-lining projects covering 3,675 miles had been completed across Sindh, resulting in substantial water savings.

The work is particularly significant for an agriculture-dependent province, where efficient water management is closely linked to crop production and rural livelihoods.

Canal lining can help reduce water losses through seepage and improve the efficiency of irrigation networks, although the long-term benefits depend on maintenance and effective water management.

Government Points to Development as Measure of Performance

Memon said the provincial government should be judged by the projects being delivered rather than by political claims.

He argued that roads, homes, electricity generation and improvements in public services provided tangible evidence of the government’s development priorities.

The Rs1.018 trillion programme for 2025-26 represents a major commitment to infrastructure and public development, with thousands of schemes spread across Sindh.

The government’s challenge will now be to ensure that these projects are completed effectively, maintained over the long term and translated into visible improvements in the daily lives of residents.

With major investments underway in transport, housing, energy and irrigation, Sindh is seeking to accelerate development while addressing some of the province’s longstanding infrastructure and basic-service needs.
