Samsung is reportedly working to improve the power efficiency of its next-generation Exynos modem. The upgrade could help address battery-life concerns associated with some Galaxy smartphones powered by Samsung’s own chipsets.
According to South Korean publication The Elec, Samsung’s upcoming M2700 modem could deliver better power efficiency and competitive performance. The modem is expected to pair with the Exynos 2700 chipset in some Galaxy S27 models.
The reported improvements could reduce modem-related battery drain, particularly when phones remain on standby. They could also help narrow the perceived battery-life gap between Exynos-powered Galaxy devices and models that use Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.
Samsung has not officially confirmed the M2700’s specifications or performance claims.
The report says Samsung plans to manufacture the M2700 using a 4nm process. The company reportedly uses the same manufacturing node for the modem associated with the Exynos 2600 and Galaxy S26 generation.

Despite retaining the 4nm process, Samsung could improve efficiency through internal design changes and voltage adjustments. The report also claims that an optical die shrink has reduced the chip’s area by 4%.
These changes could help Samsung improve power consumption without moving to a more advanced manufacturing process.
The report also suggests that Samsung may replace the Exynos Modem branding with an M-series naming system for future products.
If the company achieves the reported gains, the M2700 could offer better energy efficiency while allowing Samsung to retain its existing manufacturing approach.
The M2700 could also introduce connectivity improvements. According to the report, the modem will move from 3GPP Release 17 to Release 18, which supports the evolution of 5G Advanced technologies.
The upgrade may also improve support for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). These networks can enable satellite-based communications when compatible hardware, services and network support are available.
However, the report does not clarify which satellite features Samsung plans to offer consumers. The company has yet to publish official specifications for the modem.
Samsung is also reportedly developing an M2800 modem for the Galaxy S28 generation. The company may manufacture the next-generation chip using a 2nm process.
A move to 2nm technology could improve power efficiency and performance, although actual results would depend on the final design and implementation.
The transition could also free up Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing capacity for other products. These may include high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which data centres use to support artificial intelligence workloads.
Samsung’s System LSI division is reportedly seeking wider adoption of the company’s own processors across its flagship Galaxy S range.
However, the report says Samsung has not settled whether the Exynos 2700 will power the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The final decision could affect which markets receive Exynos-powered models and which receive Snapdragon versions.
For now, the M2700’s reported efficiency gains offer a possible improvement for future Galaxy phones. Real-world battery life will depend on the complete device, including its processor, display, software and network conditions.
