Azerbaijan has reaffirmed its support for a Palestinian state, with President Ilham Aliyev backing the establishment of an independent and sovereign nation with East Jerusalem as its capital.
President Aliyev made the remarks during a meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa on Thursday, according to a statement from the Azerbaijani presidency.
Aliyev said he hoped Mustafa’s visit would strengthen the long-standing fraternal ties between Azerbaijan and Palestine.

“The President of Azerbaijan emphasised that our country supports the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the presidency said.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Mustafa conveyed greetings from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to President Aliyev.
Aliyev thanked Mustafa for the message and asked him to extend his greetings to President Abbas in return.
The meeting highlighted Azerbaijan’s continued support for the internationally recognised two-state solution and closer relations with Palestine.
