VIENNA/ISLAMABAD, September 8, 2026: Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to international standards of nuclear and radiation safety and nuclear security at the ongoing meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr Raja Ali Raza Anwar delivered Pakistan’s national statement at the meeting.

Dr Anwar said responsibility for nuclear safety and security within a state rests with the respective member state. He stressed that this principle should remain central to the IAEA’s planning and activities in these areas.

Pakistan Highlights Nuclear Safety Record

Dr Anwar said Pakistan remains committed to international standards of nuclear safety and security.

According to the PAEC statement, these standards form an essential part of Pakistan’s peaceful nuclear programme.

He highlighted Pakistan’s five decades of operating nuclear installations. He described the record as evidence of the country’s domestic nuclear safety and security framework.

Dr Anwar also welcomed continued progress in nuclear safety and security worldwide with IAEA assistance.

He recognised the agency’s role in supporting member states through capacity-building programmes.

Pakistan Highlights Role in Global Nuclear Safety

The PAEC chairman also highlighted Pakistan’s participation in the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS).

Pakistan served as president of the 10th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety. The meeting took place in April 2026.

Dr Anwar expressed confidence that recommendations from the review meeting would help strengthen nuclear safety globally.

He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s cooperation with the IAEA in nuclear safety and security.

Pakistani Experts Support IAEA Activities

According to the statement, Pakistani experts contributed to an IAEA-coordinated emergency exercise in the Philippines during 2026.

Pakistani experts also participated in an International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) mission to China.

Dr Anwar said such cooperation reflects Pakistan’s continued engagement with international nuclear safety and security efforts.

Pakistan Expands Regional Capacity Building

Dr Anwar highlighted Pakistan’s contribution to regional capacity building.

He said the National Institute of Safety and Security (NISAS), an IAEA Collaborating Centre, continues to support regional member states.

The institute hosts IAEA-sponsored activities focused on nuclear safety and security.

He also highlighted the Pakistan Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Security (PCENS). According to the PAEC statement, the centre has developed into a regional capacity-building hub under a Practical Arrangement with the IAEA.

The statement said PCENS supports member states in strengthening expertise in nuclear security.
