Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued an urgent cybersecurity advisory over a serious vulnerability in TeamViewer.
The software is widely used for remote access and technical support. According to the advisory, the security flaw could allow attackers to compromise systems during remote control sessions.
National CERT warned that attackers could execute malicious code, crash computers or gain control of affected systems.
The advisory states that Windows, Linux and macOS versions of TeamViewer may be affected. In particular, users running versions older than 15.83 face potential security risks.
Therefore, National CERT has advised users to install TeamViewer version 15.83 or the latest available release. Security updates have also been issued for older versions, including TeamViewer 13 and 14.
Furthermore, the advisory warns that malicious data could compromise a device during a remote control session. Connecting to untrusted computers through TeamViewer may also expose users and organisations to additional cyber threats.
National CERT has directed public and private organisations to review all TeamViewer installations immediately.
The review should cover computers, servers and remote support systems. Organisations should also install available security updates without delay.

In addition, they should restrict unnecessary remote access. Only authorised users should receive access, and permissions should remain limited to legitimate operational requirements.
The advisory also stresses the need to verify the identity of the other party before accepting a remote session.
National CERT has recommended continuous monitoring of TeamViewer connections. This can help organisations identify suspicious access attempts and unusual system activity.
Moreover, organisations should regularly review remote sessions. They should remain alert to potentially malicious connections, particularly those involving untrusted computers.
If an immediate security update is not possible, users should block untrusted remote connections as a precaution.
The advisory recommends restricting or disabling remote access to any device suspected of being compromised.
This step can help prevent further unauthorised access while security teams assess and secure the affected system.
Finally, National CERT has urged all TeamViewer users to follow the recommended precautions promptly. The measures aim to reduce the risk of exploitation and protect computer systems and networks.
