Karachi’s Munawwar Chowrangi Underpass Opens Ahead of Schedule to Ease Traffic

KARACHI: Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the Munawwar Chowrangi Underpass on Sunday. They opened the project to traffic and the public.

The Karachi Development Authority (KDA) built the 500-metre underpass. It has a width of 24 feet and supports two-way traffic. The project links key commercial and residential areas. It aims to reduce congestion and improve travel times.

Project Completed Ahead of Schedule

Officials completed the underpass in just 16 months. The project cost around Rs2 billion. Elected representatives, senior officials, engineers, and residents attended the inauguration ceremony.

Nasir Shah said commuters could start using the underpass immediately. He added that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah would formally inaugurate the project later.

Government Focuses on Karachi’s Infrastructure

Nasir Shah said the Sindh government continues to prioritize Karachi’s infrastructure. Several road and traffic improvement projects are already underway across the city.

He said authorities have allocated funds for road construction and rehabilitation. Town administrations are also carrying out development work in their respective areas.

The minister warned that authorities would investigate complaints about construction quality. He said the government would not tolerate negligence.

Sindh Rejects Calls for Division

Nasir Shah rejected demands for a separate province. He said Sindh remains united and cannot be divided.

He added that new flyovers, underpasses, and roads reflect the city’s ongoing development. He also highlighted the removal of illegal marriage halls built on playgrounds. According to him, the move restored public spaces for residents.

More Development Projects Planned

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the city administration completed the project eight months ahead of its original schedule. He credited effective planning and continuous monitoring for the early completion.

He said work continues on roads, flyovers, underpasses, parks, and playgrounds across Karachi. He also announced that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will soon inaugurate a new industrial park.

Wahab confirmed that authorities paused the proposed Disco Bakery Chowrangi flyover. The relevant town chairman from Jamaat-e-Islami requested the delay.

Residents welcomed the opening of the underpass. They said the project will improve traffic flow and strengthen connectivity across Karachi.
