The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi has inaugurated the Japanese Film Festival 2026 at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi.

The festival is being held in collaboration with the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association, Sindh (PJCA), and the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi. The annual event is organized by the Japanese Consulate and the Japan Foundation (JF).

The festival aims to promote Japanese culture through cinema. This year’s programme features six films covering different genres and stories from Japan.

Children of the Sea Opens Festival

The opening ceremony featured a screening of the Japanese animated film Children of the Sea.

The film follows a lonely teenage girl who develops a close bond with two mysterious brothers raised in the ocean. Their encounter leads her towards a mysterious connection with the deep sea.

Screenings will continue throughout September at selected venues across Karachi. Audiences will have the opportunity to explore different aspects of Japanese cinema through the festival’s six-film programme.

Japan Highlights Cultural Exchange

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Consul General HATTORI Masaru welcomed the audience’s enthusiastic response.

He also highlighted the role of cinema in creating cultural connections between people.

“I truly hope that this film festival brings you meaningful encounters, lasting memories, and maybe even a fresh perspective or two,” HATTORI said.

The festival is part of Japan’s wider cultural engagement with audiences in Pakistan. Through Japanese cinema, organizers hope to encourage greater interest in the country’s culture and creative industries.

Pakistani Animator Shares Anime Journey

Shahzeen Khan, a guest of honor and animator associated with The Glassworker, also spoke at the ceremony.

Khan recalled how Japanese anime and cultural events helped shape her creative journey. She also discussed her involvement with the pop-culture group Shonen Infinity.

According to Khan, initiatives supported by the Consulate-General of Japan played an important role in encouraging her interest in animation and Japanese culture.

She also appreciated the Consulate’s continued support for Pakistan’s growing pop-culture community. In particular, she highlighted initiatives such as Geek Haven.

Khan described these programmes as a source of inspiration for a new generation of artists and storytellers.

Festival Continues Across Karachi

The Japanese Film Festival 2026 will continue throughout September at selected venues in Karachi.

With six films on the programme, the festival offers audiences an opportunity to experience Japanese storytelling, animation and cinema.

The event also provides a platform for cultural exchange between Japan and Pakistan. Organizers expect the screenings to strengthen public interest in Japanese culture while creating new connections through film.
