German startup Isar Aerospace has successfully placed its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Arctic Norway, marking a major milestone for Europe’s efforts to build independent access to space.
The uncrewed rocket lifted off from Andøya Spaceport and became the first commercial rocket to reach orbit from continental Europe, according to Isar Aerospace.
The achievement strengthens Europe’s growing commercial space sector as several countries seek a larger role in the expanding satellite-launch market.

Spectrum carried five small satellites and an in-flight technology experiment during its latest mission.
The rocket targets the growing market for small and medium-sized satellite payloads.
Isar co-founder and CEO Daniel Metzler said launch capacity remains one of the biggest constraints facing the space industry.
“Launch capability is right now the biggest bottleneck in the entire industry,” Metzler told reporters.

He also said the privately owned company remains well funded. An initial public offering, he added, does not currently form part of the company’s plans.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the launch and described it as the beginning of a new era.
Merz visited Isar’s launch site in March. His visit reflected Germany’s wider push to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy in space.
EU Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius also welcomed the achievement.
“Europe’s independent access to space just got a major boost,” Kubilius wrote on X.
Norway’s Minister of Industry and Commerce Cecilie Myrseth said the launch could also strengthen Norwegian and European security during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.
The successful mission marked Isar’s second launch.
The company’s first Spectrum rocket launched from the same site about 18 months earlier but failed shortly after takeoff. The rocket fell into the sea and exploded. No one suffered injuries.
Isar now has five additional rockets in production.
The company plans to increase launch activity as demand for satellite services grows. Its long-term target involves roughly 40 launches each year.
The latest mission served as both a qualification flight and Spectrum’s first mission carrying payloads.
Isar Aerospace is also expanding beyond Norway.
The company is developing another launch site in Nova Scotia, eastern Canada. Isar expects the facility to become operational for launches in 2028.
The expansion could give the company greater flexibility as it increases production and launch frequency.
Isar also secured around €200 million from the European Space Agency in August. The funding will support new rocket development and help expand testing and launch infrastructure.
Europe’s commercial launch market faces competition from major global players.
SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, operates a large launch network from the United States. France’s ArianeGroup also remains a major European player, with operations linked to the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana.
Other European countries are developing their own launch capabilities.
Sweden operates the Esrange Space Center, while Britain is developing launch activity at SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands.
These efforts reflect a broader European goal to reduce reliance on foreign launch providers and strengthen independent access to space.
Isar Aerospace’s successful Spectrum mission could therefore become an important step in Europe’s expanding commercial space ambitions.
