Iran Warns Regional Infrastructure at Risk if Security Not Guaranteed

TEHRAN, September 29, 2026: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has warned that regional infrastructure could face risks if Iran’s security is not guaranteed.

Ghalibaf made the remarks as Tehran awaited a response from Washington over proposals linked to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Ghalibaf said Iran would not be intimidated by US threats or pressure.

“In a region where we cannot sell our oil, no one will sell theirs,” he said.

Ghalibaf also warned that Iran would respond to what it considers threats or military pressure.

Iran Links Hormuz to Security Conditions

Ghalibaf said Iran’s position was linked to its security and ability to export oil.

He argued that attempts to restrict Iran’s trade routes would not force Tehran to retreat.

His comments came as indirect diplomatic contacts continued between Iran and the United States.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Qatar had discussed new ideas with Tehran for meeting Iran’s conditions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He said the proposals would be presented to Washington.

Iran has previously said reopening the waterway would depend on conditions linked to the conflict, sanctions and US military pressure.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major route for global energy shipments. Disruptions there have continued to affect oil markets and regional trade.

IRGC Accuses Trump of Misleading Americans

An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson also criticised US President Donald Trump.

IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi called Trump a “big liar” and disputed US claims about Iran’s nuclear programme and its influence over the Strait of Hormuz.

Mohebbi said Iran was not seeking nuclear weapons.

He also rejected claims that limited US-protected oil shipments through the waterway meant that the strait had fully reopened.

Reuters reported that Kpler data showed oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz were recovering towards 10 million barrels per day in September, around half their pre-war level.

Iran Continues Diplomatic Efforts

Araghchi said Iranian and US officials continued communicating through mediators.

Qatar and Pakistan have been involved in the diplomatic contacts, according to Iranian officials.

Iran has proposed a seven-day framework that would link the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to broader steps involving the conflict, sanctions and negotiations over its nuclear programme.

Trump has publicly rejected Iran’s latest proposal. However, US officials have continued discussions through intermediaries.

The diplomatic efforts come as the conflict continues to affect energy markets and regional transport.

Russia Opposes Iranian NPT Withdrawal

Meanwhile, Russia said it does not want Iran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow expects Iran to remain a party to the treaty.

The comments followed statements from Iranian officials about the possibility of reconsidering Tehran’s participation in the agreement.

Iranian officials have maintained that the country does not seek nuclear weapons.

Iran Criticises US Aviation Sanctions

An Iranian international law scholar also criticised recent US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector.

Shahram Zarneshan of Allameh Tabataba’i University said the measures could raise questions under international aviation agreements.

He referred to the 1994 Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation and other bilateral agreements governing air transport.

The United States announced sanctions earlier this month against entities and individuals linked to Iran’s aviation industry.

Iranian officials have argued that the restrictions could affect international aviation links and passenger travel.
