Gemini Notebook is the new name for Google’s artificial intelligence-powered research and note-taking platform, formerly known as NotebookLM, as the company brings more of its AI products under the Gemini brand.
Google announced the rebranding on 16 July, saying the application will continue operating as a standalone platform while integrating more closely with the Gemini app and Google Search.
The company said Gemini Notebook will continue helping users analyse, summarise and organise their own documents, research materials and other sources while providing seamless access across Google’s expanding AI ecosystem.
Google first introduced the platform as Project Tailwind during Google I/O 2023 before launching it globally as NotebookLM. The AI-powered assistant allows users to upload their own documents, generate summaries, ask questions and gain insights from personal research materials.

According to Google, more than 30 million users and over 600,000 organisations now use the platform.
Despite the new branding, Google said Gemini Notebook will remain a specialised research assistant rather than evolving into a general-purpose AI chatbot.
The company has also expanded integration between Gemini Notebook and its broader AI services. Users can already create and manage notebooks through the Gemini app, with automatic synchronisation between both experiences.
Google also plans to bring notebook access to AI Mode in Google Search, allowing users to interact with their research materials while searching for information. The company has not announced a launch date for the feature.
Alongside the rebranding, Google introduced a secure cloud-based coding environment that allows users to write and execute code directly inside their notebooks.
The new capability supports advanced data analysis by enabling users to process and examine information from uploaded documents more efficiently.
Google has made the feature available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and eligible Google Workspace business customers. The company said it will expand access to Google AI Pro users on the web in the coming weeks.
Google has also broadened the platform’s capabilities beyond traditional note-taking by introducing features that convert research into audio summaries, video summaries and AI-generated learning materials.
The company said the latest updates reflect its strategy of unifying artificial intelligence products under the Gemini brand while continuing to develop specialised tools for research, learning and productivity.
The transition to Gemini Notebook will roll out automatically through the existing NotebookLM platform.
