The Europe Wildfires crisis intensified on Saturday after authorities evacuated thousands more residents in France and Spain as firefighters struggled to contain multiple large blazes.

French officials ordered the evacuation of nearly 60,000 people near Bordeaux, pushing the total number of evacuees across both countries beyond 220,000.

France Mobilises Military as Fires Spread

Around 200,000 people have evacuated from the Gironde and Landes regions in southwestern France.

President Emmanuel Macron mobilised the military to support firefighting and emergency operations as several wildfires continued to expand.

Authorities evacuated four towns near Bordeaux, affecting more than 58,000 residents. The Gironde blaze has burned over 19,000 hectares and destroyed about 80 homes.

Officials also evacuated the entire Cap Ferret peninsula, with hundreds of residents leaving by boat.

A separate wildfire near Biscarrosse forced more than 23,000 additional evacuations.

France’s Interior Minister said the intensity of the fires was unprecedented for the region. He also confirmed that about 50 firefighters had suffered injuries while battling the flames.

Spain Faces Worst Wildfire Crisis Near Madrid

Spain remains under a national emergency after authorities ordered 25,000 people to evacuate and advised nearly 40,000 residents to stay indoors.

Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso described the blaze near Madrid as the worst wildfire in the region’s history after three separate fires merged west of the capital.

Emergency management chief Carlos Novillo said firefighters could no longer attack the flames directly because of the fire’s intensity. Instead, crews shifted to defensive operations to protect communities.

Officials said the fire advanced nearly 12 miles in less than 30 minutes in Ávila province.

The Madrid region has recorded about 6,000 hectares of burned land, while the Ávila wildfire has destroyed nearly 9,000 hectares. Authorities have completely evacuated almost eight municipalities.

EU Sends Firefighting Support

The European Union has deployed firefighting aircraft and helicopters to assist emergency crews in both France and Spain.

EU climate data show that Europe is warming more than twice as fast as the global average, creating drier conditions that increase the risk and intensity of wildfires across the continent.
