Dua Lipa has voiced support for ongoing protests in Albania against a proposed luxury resort development backed by investors led by Jared Kushner, calling the demonstrations “inspiring.”

The singer shared her views during a conversation with Albanian academic and author Lea Ypi on her Service95 Book Club podcast, as protests against the €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) development entered their sixth week.

“I find it so inspiring to see how much people really care,” Lipa said while discussing the growing public opposition to the project.

The proposed development includes construction on Sazan Island, Albania’s only island, and about 10,000 villas on the nearby Zvërnec peninsula. Both sites hold protected status because of their rich biodiversity and important wildlife habitats.

Lipa also criticised the Albanian government’s decision to amend environmental laws in 2024, saying the move removed legal protections without public consultation.

“What I actually find concerning is the principle that the government could just change the law to remove the environmental protection without any kind of public consultation,” she said.

The legal changes cleared the way for the development to proceed. However, there is no evidence that Jared Kushner played any role in the government’s decision to amend the legislation.

The investment group backing the project includes Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump.

Environmental organisations welcomed Lipa’s comments. Aleksander Trajce, head of the Protection and Preservation of the Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), said her remarks encouraged many young Albanians who oppose the development.

Despite weeks of demonstrations, the developers said they plan to continue with the project, adding that they remain committed to responsible environmental management, job creation and long-term benefits for local communities.
