Authorities closed six metro stations in Delhi on Monday. Police also announced traffic restrictions ahead of an opposition march to the Supreme Court. The protest targets a controversial revision of India’s voter lists.
Opposition parties and supporters of the “Cockroach” youth movement have staged near-daily protests this month. They want Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Critics allege that the voter list revision benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The revision began last year and has removed more than 130 million names from electoral rolls, according to Election Commission data. The deletions include deceased voters, people who relocated, and individuals authorities could not trace.
Police detained thousands of protesters in Delhi over the weekend. Those detained included leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Thousands of security personnel blocked protesters from marching through central Delhi. Authorities closed six metro stations for security reasons on Monday. Police also imposed restrictions and diversions on more than 20 road stretches.

The main opposition Congress party announced a march to the Supreme Court. It plans to submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice. The party wants an end to what it calls “vote theft” and demands Kumar’s resignation.
“Youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, all those who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India, will walk with us,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on X.
Chief Justice Surya Kant declined a meeting request from Gandhi and the Congress delegation, a Congress source said.
In an email, the Chief Justice reportedly advised the delegation to approach the court through legal proceedings. The issue is already before the court, according to the source.
Separately, the CJP said its leaders would meet Delhi Police. They want authorities to provide a date for a peaceful protest.
The group threatened to announce another protest if officials failed to provide a date within 24 hours.
The youth movement has organised protests in recent months over several issues. These include government school facilities and employment opportunities. The demonstrations have emerged as a major political challenge for Modi and the BJP.
The latest unrest followed a report by The Indian Express last month. The newspaper reported that two deputy election commissioners had raised internal concerns about voter list revisions, registration procedures, and digital systems.
Election Commission data shows that authorities deleted around 130 million names during the verification exercise. The figures include approximately 28 million deceased people, 63 million who had relocated, and 30 million who could not be traced.
Opposition parties allege that the deletions disproportionately affect Muslim voters and other minorities. They argue that these groups are less likely to support the ruling BJP.
The Election Commission and the BJP reject allegations of political bias. The poll panel says eligible voters whose names were wrongly removed can register again. The BJP has accused opposition parties of undermining democracy by questioning legitimate electoral procedures.
The dispute continues to fuel protests and raise questions about voter registration and electoral transparency in India.
