Asim Munir Heads to Tehran as Pakistan Steps Up Iran-US Peace Efforts

ISLAMABAD, August 24, 2026: Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi left for Iran on Monday as Pakistan renewed efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Munir’s visit will focus on efforts toward a peaceful, lasting and comprehensive resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.

Munir to Hold Talks in Tehran

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday that Munir would lead an official delegation to Tehran.

Baghaei said the visit aims to strengthen Pakistan-Iran bilateral cooperation and support Islamabad’s efforts to promote peace and security in the region.

Munir is expected to meet senior Iranian officials during his visit. The discussions are also likely to cover regional security and developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Fourth Visit Since Conflict Began

Munir’s latest trip marks his fourth visit to Tehran since the US-Iran conflict erupted in February.

He previously visited Iran in April and May as part of Pakistan’s mediation efforts. He also travelled to Tehran in July to attend the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

His repeated engagement with Iranian officials highlights Pakistan’s efforts to keep communication channels open between Tehran and Washington.

Pakistan Pushes Mediation Efforts

Pakistan emerged as a key mediator after the US-Iran conflict escalated earlier this year.

Islamabad subsequently helped broker an agreement between Iran and the United States through the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed in June. The framework created a 60-day period for negotiations on issues including sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear programme.

Pakistan and Qatar later supported talks between the two sides in Switzerland. However, the negotiations failed to produce a final agreement within the proposed timeframe.

The 60-day period ended on August 17 without a breakthrough. Iran has disputed the characterization of the period as a strict deadline.

Baghaei previously said the memorandum did not contain a mandatory 60-day deadline. He also indicated that the process could continue if both sides failed to reach an agreement.

Strait of Hormuz Adds to Regional Concerns

Munir’s visit comes as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to grow.

Iran has warned against actions that could undermine its arrangements for vessels using the strategic waterway. At the same time, the United States is preparing new economic measures against Tehran.

The situation has raised concerns about energy supplies and regional security.

Pakistan faces a delicate diplomatic challenge. Islamabad maintains close security and diplomatic ties with Iran while also preserving important strategic and economic relations with the United States and Gulf countries.

Munir’s latest visit therefore reflects Pakistan’s attempt to maintain dialogue with Tehran while keeping its broader regional peace efforts alive.
