US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent contacted Beijing at President Donald Trump’s direction. He requested China’s assistance in using its influence with Tehran to end the war.
According to the report, Beijing has since conveyed Washington’s message to Iran. The development comes as the US pursues diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
US Vice President JD Vance is leading the administration’s diplomatic efforts, the report said. He reportedly sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei last month.
The letter formed part of Washington’s outreach to Tehran. Iranian leaders are also assessing whether the US approach could change following the midterm elections.
The report said Trump had previously sought Chinese President Xi Jinping’s assistance on Iran. He raised the issue during their meeting in September.
Meanwhile, Trump said the United States was holding discussions with Iran. He described the negotiations as positive.
“We are talking to Iran, and we are doing very well,” Trump said. He also claimed Washington had achieved encouraging results in its dealings with Tehran.

Trump further claimed that Iran had suffered a severe defeat. He described the Strait of Hormuz as fully open.
The US president also said no American military personnel had been lost over the previous six to seven months. These remarks were part of his account of the conflict.
In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump reiterated his position on Iran’s nuclear programme.
He claimed that preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons had saved Israel and the wider Middle East.
Trump argued that Israel and the region might not exist today without those efforts. He added that some people were unwilling to acknowledge this claim, despite what he described as its truth.
