Arsenal Beat Slavia Prague 2-1 as Gyökeres Delivers Goal and Assist

The victory extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the league phase. Noni Madueke also scored for Mikel Arteta’s side, while Wiktor Nowak netted a late consolation for the hosts.

Arteta made six changes to the team that beat Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. Gyökeres led the attack in place of Kai Havertz.

Arsenal took the lead in the ninth minute through Madueke. Gyökeres created the opportunity with a clever pass behind the Slavia defence. Madueke raced onto the ball and finished confidently.

The Swedish striker then doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 38th minute. He exchanged passes with Mikel Merino before curling a fine finish beyond the goalkeeper and into the net off the post.

Slavia Prague Fight Back After Half-Time

Slavia Prague returned with greater intensity after the break and immediately tested Arsenal’s defence.

David Raya produced an important save to deny Oskar Kubiak, who shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The hosts continued to apply pressure. Following a corner, Mojmír Chytil sent a header towards goal, but Gabriel Magalhães cleared the ball off the line.

Slavia eventually reduced the deficit in the 90th minute. Wiktor Nowak scored from close range after the home side created another opportunity in the Arsenal penalty area.

Arsenal held on through the closing minutes to secure all three points.

Arsenal Remain Unbeaten in Champions League

Arsenal have now completed four league-phase matches without defeat. The club also recorded a 100 per cent record during this stage of last season’s competition.

The win moved the Gunners to third in the league-phase standings, behind Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Despite the result, Arteta criticised his team’s second-half performance.

He praised the players’ spirit and determination but admitted they had fallen below their expected standards.

“This is a team that has huge spirit, huge conviction and if you give them something they will grab it,” Arteta said after the match.

He added: “We were extremely far from our standards. In everything we have to do in our basics, in every concept and in everything we discussed to avoid in the game we played in the second half.”

Arteta said the team had been “very far from the standards we expect from eachother” but found a way to protect the lead and win the match.

Gyökeres’ goal and assist proved decisive as Arsenal left Prague with another important Champions League victory.
