Everton booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Thursday. They will now travel to face League Two side Fleetwood Town.
James Garner and Hayden Hackney scored before half-time. Their goals gave Everton control at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Thierno Barry added a third after the break. Dan Burn scored a late consolation goal for Newcastle.
Everton secured the win without midfielder Jack Grealish. The club left him out of the squad following an internal disciplinary breach. Everton supporter and Prime Minister Andy Burnham also watched the match.
Everton opened the scoring through Garner. He curled the ball into the net after Newcastle lost possession in their own half.
Hackney made it 2-0 shortly before the break. He finished a cross from Barry. It was Hackney’s first goal for Everton since his summer move from Middlesbrough.

Barry then extended Everton’s lead after the break. He finished a move involving Kieran Dewsbury-Hall.
Newcastle defender Burn scored a late header. However, Everton held on and secured their place in the last eight.
Everton will now travel to Fleetwood Town. The League Two side caused a major upset earlier in the competition. They eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal.
The other quarter-final ties will feature three more matches. Crystal Palace will host Sunderland. Bournemouth will travel to Liverpool. Manchester City will face third-tier Bradford City.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for the week beginning December 14.
