Iowa running back Kamari Moulton will miss the rest of the season because of an upper-body injury. Head coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed the news on Tuesday.
Moulton suffered the injury during Iowa’s 13-10 loss to Minnesota on Saturday. He left the game in the second quarter and did not return.
Reports said doctors examined Moulton’s right shoulder before moving him to the medical tent. He was later seen wearing a sling after the game.
“Unfortunately, he’s going to be done,” Ferentz said during his weekly press conference. “We’ll look forward to getting him back here, but he’s got some rehab to go through.”
Moulton has been one of Iowa’s leading offensive players this season. He ranks second in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game, averaging 90.2. He has also recorded 541 rushing yards and four touchdowns in six games.
The senior running back set career highs twice this season. He rushed for 183 yards on 11 carries in a 40-0 season-opening win over Northern Illinois.
He later delivered another strong performance against Washington. Moulton gained 208 yards on 26 carries in Iowa’s 41-24 road victory on October 9.
Ferentz praised Moulton’s progress and growing confidence this season.

“Kamari is playing his best football this year because of the experience, confidence that you only get by playing,” Ferentz said. “You have to go out and get beat up sometimes to grow true confidence.”
Xavier Williams is the likely starter for Iowa’s next game. The Hawkeyes will face No. 25 Wisconsin on Saturday.
Williams has rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. His performance could become more important with Moulton sidelined.
However, Iowa could also face uncertainty in its running back rotation. L.J. Phillips Jr., who began the season as the backup, is dealing with an unspecified issue.
Ferentz said Phillips took part in some work on Tuesday. The coach described his status as day-to-day.
“He got to work a little bit (Tuesday), and (he) will probably be day-to-day, so we’ll see what the week brings there,” Ferentz said.
Iowa enters the Wisconsin matchup with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-2 mark in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes will need their available running backs to step up as they prepare for the next challenge.
