PSG Beat Lyon 2-0 to Go Top of Ligue 1 as Mika Godts Shines

Paris Saint-Germain moved to the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais, as Mika Godts scored his first goal for the club after helping set up the opener at the Parc des Princes.

The reigning European champions overcame several injury absences to secure their eighth consecutive win in all competitions. The result put PSG one point ahead of Rennes in the French league standings.

Godts, the Belgian international signed from Ajax during the close season, came off the bench and assisted Senny Mayulu’s 72nd-minute goal before scoring himself late in the match.

PSG coach Luis Enrique praised the young forward after the game.

“Mika is an ambitious player with a lot of quality, and he is only 21,” Enrique said. “We have full confidence in him and we signed him because we want him to be here for many years.”

Mayulu Breaks the Deadlock for PSG

Despite dominating much of the contest, PSG struggled to convert their possession into goals during the first half.

Lyon threatened on two occasions, with Julien Duranville and Zachary Athekame testing goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. However, PSG gradually increased the pressure after the break.

Godts entered the game shortly before the hour mark, replacing Joao Neves. In the 72nd minute, he supplied the pass that allowed Mayulu to fire a powerful shot into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season.

PSG then secured the result in the 84th minute. Quentin Ndjantou released Godts, who finished confidently to complete the 2-0 victory.

Enrique also praised his substitutes for making an impact, saying they deserved more opportunities despite the competition for places in the squad.

Injuries Leave PSG Without Key Players

PSG entered the match without several important players, including Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes and captain Marquinhos.

Dembele and Kvaratskhelia sustained injuries during the team’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona the previous week. Kvaratskhelia was reported to have torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury expected to keep him out for an extended period.

Enrique dedicated the win to the Georgian winger.

“I would like to dedicate this win to ‘Kvara’,” the coach said. “We are very proud of him. We remain motivated as a team to keep winning but this victory is for him.”

The match was originally scheduled for Sunday but was postponed by 24 hours following a request from Paris police, who wanted to redirect resources amid violent protests in the French capital.

The revised schedule also coincided with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where 10 PSG players were among the 30 nominees, including Dembele and Kvaratskhelia.

PSG Take Early Control of Ligue 1

PSG’s victory marked their fifth consecutive league win and strengthened their position at the top of the table.

The team’s early-season turnaround has been notable. PSG failed to win any of their first three Ligue 1 matches but have since climbed above their domestic rivals.

Enrique, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions too early in the campaign.

“It is still just the start of the season,” he said, stressing that the team would need to build its rhythm before the most important part of the season in April.

Rennes had briefly moved to the top after beating Strasbourg 3-0 on Sunday. Lille and AS Monaco were also close behind PSG after playing out a 1-1 draw.

Lyon remained fifth, level on points with Paris FC but ahead on goal difference. The defeat left them three points behind defending champions PSG.
