PS6 Could Cost Over $1,000 as Memory Prices Surge, Leak Suggests

Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 6 could face a significant pricing challenge as rising memory costs threaten to push manufacturing expenses higher. According to hardware leaker KeplerL2, the console’s memory components could now cost more than $680 alone.

The estimate includes RAM and SSD storage, according to the report. It does not account for other major components, such as the processor, graphics hardware and cooling system.

The claim has raised fresh concerns about whether Sony can launch the PS6 at a price that appeals to mainstream consumers.

PS6 Manufacturing Costs May Be Rising

Earlier estimates attributed to KeplerL2 suggested that the PS6 could cost Sony around $760 to manufacture in March 2026. That figure fuelled speculation that Sony might subsidise the console and launch it for approximately $699.99.

However, a later report in June put the estimated manufacturing cost at around $960. If accurate, that would leave Sony with limited room to offer the console at a lower retail price.

The latest claim about memory costs adds further pressure. If RAM and SSD components alone exceed $680, Sony could face a difficult decision over its launch price, hardware specifications or profit margins.

However, these figures remain unconfirmed estimates attributed to a hardware leaker. Sony has not officially announced the PS6’s price or manufacturing costs.

AI Demand Could Affect Console Prices

Growing demand for computing hardware from artificial intelligence data centres has raised concerns about memory supply and component prices across the technology industry.

Gaming consoles compete for some of the same semiconductor and memory resources used in other computing products. Higher component costs could therefore affect the economics of future consoles.

A manufacturing cost approaching or exceeding $1,000 would create a major challenge for Sony. A retail price above that level could put the PS6 beyond the reach of many existing PlayStation users.

Sony could respond in several ways. It might accept lower margins, adjust the hardware configuration or explore different pricing strategies. However, the company has not announced any such plans.

PS5 Could Remain Relevant for Years

A high launch price could encourage Sony to support the PlayStation 5 for longer than usual. The PS5 already has an established player base, giving developers a large audience for upcoming games.

Consequently, the next generation could see an extended period in which major releases support both the PS5 and PS6.

That approach could help Sony reach more players while limiting the pressure to make the new console essential immediately. However, developers would need to balance support for older hardware with the performance benefits of newer systems.

The PS6 is also rumoured to offer roughly twice the performance of the PS5. A handheld device could accompany the next-generation hardware, potentially expanding Sony’s gaming ecosystem.

Neither the performance claim nor the handheld model’s final specifications and pricing have been officially confirmed.

High Prices Could Complicate the Next Console Generation

A more powerful console could deliver improved graphics, performance and other technical features. However, those benefits may be harder to communicate if consumers must pay substantially more for the upgrade.

Sony will also need to demonstrate why players should move to the PS6 when the PS5 can continue running many major games.

An extended cross-generation period could help address that challenge. Still, it may take time before developers fully exploit the new hardware.

For now, the biggest concern is affordability. If component prices remain high, Sony could face a difficult balance between delivering a substantial performance upgrade and keeping the PS6 accessible.

The reported memory costs offer a worrying indication of the potential challenge. However, the final retail price will depend on Sony’s hardware decisions, supply agreements and market conditions closer to launch.
