KARACHI: Sindh Governor and NED University Chancellor Syed Nehal Hashmi has urged young graduates to use their knowledge, character, research and innovation to help Pakistan advance its economy, technology and global standing.
He made the remarks while addressing the 35th convocation of NED University of Engineering and Technology as chief guest.
Hashmi congratulated the graduating students, their parents and teachers. He said the convocation marked the result of years of hard work and dedication.
However, he urged graduates to view their academic success as the start of a new and responsible journey rather than its conclusion.
Hashmi said he firmly believed Pakistan’s youth could take the country to new heights through talent, education, character, research and innovation.
He encouraged graduates to apply their skills in practical life. He also stressed the importance of contributing to Pakistan’s economic and technological development.

The governor chaired the convocation as chancellor. Sindh Minister for Boards and Universities Muhammad Ismail Rahoo attended as pro-chancellor.
Other guests included Engr Aftab Rizvi, founder of the Mangi Endowment Fund; Dr Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, chairman of the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee and senior vice chairman of the Pakistan Engineering Council; and Saeed Iqbal Khan, executive director of Sazgar Engineering.
Acting NED Vice Chancellor Dr Noman Ahmed also addressed the convocation.
Before the ceremony began, he expressed the university’s condolences over the death of the father of NED Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Tufail. The gathering also offered Fateha for the deceased.
Addressing the graduates, Dr Ahmed said the distribution of degrees marked the achievement of students, parents and teachers after years of effort.
He reminded graduates that they would carry the identity of NED University into their professional lives.
More importantly, he said every student should consider themselves an ambassador of Pakistan and work to raise the country’s standing.
According to NED University spokesperson Farwa Hassan, the university awarded PhD degrees to 40 scholars during the convocation.
The recipients represented several disciplines, including Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Applied Linguistics, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Textile Engineering and Polymer Engineering.
The university also recognised outstanding academic performance across its graduating classes.
A total of 2,262 students completed their undergraduate programmes this year, while 881 students received master’s degrees.
The university awarded 34 gold medals to students who secured first positions in their respective programmes. It also presented merit certificates to students who achieved second and third positions.
The ceremony drew more than 8,000 participants, including students, parents, faculty members, city notables and Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Sindh Coordinator Fahad Shafiq.
The large gathering also maintained a high level of discipline throughout the ceremony.
