Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has resigned from the national selection committee following major changes to Pakistan’s Test squad and coaching setup ahead of the decisive third Test against England.

A well-placed source confirmed that Misbah had submitted his resignation to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He is expected to complete a notice period before formally leaving the selection committee.

His decision comes just a day after the PCB announced sweeping changes to Pakistan’s squad and coaching staff for the final Test against England, scheduled to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9 to 13.

According to sources, Misbah was unhappy with the extent of the changes made to the squad ahead of the final match of the three-Test series.

The PCB announced on Monday that seven players had been released from the Test squad, with replacements named for the final match. The board also reshuffled the coaching staff as Pakistan attempt to avoid a series whitewash.

Red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and fast-bowling coach Umar Gul were removed from their positions. White-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke were instead assigned to oversee the team for the Edgbaston Test.

Sarfaraz had taken charge as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach on April 18 ahead of the team’s two-Test tour of Bangladesh. Pakistan lost that series 2-0 before drawing their subsequent two-Test series against the West Indies 1-1.

Pakistan now face a difficult challenge against England, having already fallen 2-0 behind in the three-match series.

The third Test at Edgbaston will therefore be an opportunity for Pakistan to avoid a clean sweep and finish the series with a victory.

Misbah’s role with the selection committee

Misbah, who previously captained Pakistan across all three formats, has remained closely involved with the national team after his playing career.

He also served as Pakistan’s head coach before later returning to a selection role. His latest position was as an acting member of the national selection committee.

His reported resignation adds another layer of uncertainty to Pakistan’s cricket administration at a time when the national team is undergoing significant changes.

The PCB has yet to publicly announce details regarding Misbah’s departure or confirm who could replace him on the selection committee.
