Gulshan Sewerage problems have left a major road in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal submerged in stagnant wastewater for nearly a month, forcing commuters to navigate deep potholes, foul-smelling water and badly damaged road surfaces. Residents say repeated complaints have failed to produce a lasting solution, raising concerns over public safety and sanitation.
The affected road, which connects Blocks 13-B and 13-C, remains covered with overflowing sewage, causing traffic disruptions and making daily travel increasingly dangerous. Gulshan Sewerage issues have worsened as standing water continues to erode the road, creating potholes estimated to be up to half a foot deep and increasing the risk of accidents for motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Residents said the persistent overflow has filled the neighbourhood with an unbearable stench while exposing people to unhygienic conditions. They criticised civic authorities for failing to resolve the issue despite the crisis continuing for several weeks.

The road has also served as an alternative route for commuters avoiding the deteriorating conditions on University Road. However, locals say the damaged surface and continuous sewage overflow have now made the road nearly impassable, adding to traffic congestion across the area.
Officials from the Karachi Water Corporation said the sewerage line was damaged during excavation work carried out by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) for the installation of new gas pipelines. According to the officials, the damaged sewer line is linked to a nearby residential project, and responsibility for repairing it lies with the project’s management.
Following media reports highlighting the issue, Water Corporation officials announced that restoration work on the damaged sewerage infrastructure would begin on Thursday. Residents, however, say they are looking for a permanent solution to prevent similar incidents from recurring and to restore safe access to one of the area’s busiest roads.
The incident has once again highlighted Karachi’s ageing sewerage infrastructure and the need for better coordination between utility agencies during excavation and development projects.
