Supergirl Becomes DC’s Lowest-Grossing Film as Box Office Struggles Deepen

Supergirl has concluded its 40-day theatrical run with a worldwide box office total of $125.9 million, making it the lowest-grossing major DC film to date, according to BoxOfficePro. The disappointing performance marks another commercial setback for DC Studios as it continues rebuilding its cinematic universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, Supergirl earned $72.1 million in North America and $53.8 million from international markets after debuting with a $37.1 million opening weekend in June. Despite high expectations, the superhero film failed to attract enough audiences to recover its reported $170 million production budget.

Industry estimates suggest the movie could cost the studio nearly $200 million after accounting for production, marketing and distribution expenses.

The film’s global earnings also placed it below several recent DC releases. Blue Beetle finished with $130.8 million worldwide, while Shazam! Fury of the Gods generated $134.1 million, leaving Supergirl at the bottom of the franchise’s modern box office rankings. It also fell below the previous record holder, Catwoman (2004), which earned $82.4 million during its theatrical release.

The disappointing results come as DC Studios co-chair James Gunn celebrated his 60th birthday while filming Man of Tomorrow, one of the studio’s upcoming projects. Gunn shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the set on Instagram, thanking the production crew and calling it “the best crew in the world.”

He also posted the song “It’s Not The End Of The World” by Foxy Shazam, a choice that sparked online speculation among fans about whether the message reflected the recent box office disappointment or simply marked a personal celebration.

Although Supergirl’s weak financial performance has fuelled debate about the future direction of DC Studios, there has been no indication that Gunn or co-head Peter Safran will leave their positions. Industry observers note that the studio’s long-term strategy will depend on the success of its upcoming films and broader corporate developments, including ongoing uncertainty surrounding a potential Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery agreement.

For now, Supergirl stands as one of the biggest commercial disappointments in DC’s history, placing additional pressure on future releases to restore confidence in the studio’s new cinematic roadmap.
