India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned after days of nationwide India Protests, marking one of the rare cabinet exits during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 12-year tenure. The resignation followed widespread demonstrations over the cancellation of the NEET medical entrance exam after a question paper leak.

The protests drew thousands of students to the streets. Many described the resignation as proof that public demonstrations can still influence government decisions. Student activist Sakhi said the movement gave young people confidence that peaceful protests could bring change.

NEET Controversy Fuels Public Anger

The protests began in May after authorities cancelled the NEET medical entrance examination because of a paper leak. Nearly two million students had to retake the test. Families linked the deaths of more than 20 students by suicide to the controversy, intensifying public outrage.

The online satirical group Cockroach Janta Party organized demonstrations demanding Pradhan’s resignation, education reforms, and compensation for affected families. The campaign gained momentum after police detained educator Sonam Wangchuk during a hunger strike in Delhi.

Social Media Drives Youth Movement

Videos showing police action against protesters spread rapidly on Instagram. Student activists shared clips of detentions, baton charges, and confrontations with officers. Many of the videos attracted millions of views and helped expand the movement nationwide.

Activists argued that the government underestimated the influence of social media platforms. They said Instagram became a powerful tool for mobilizing young people after traditional media gave limited attention to the protests.

Calls for Reform Extend Beyond Education

Many protesters said the movement reflected wider concerns about unemployment, privatization of education, and limited career opportunities. Law graduate Somaya Korde described Pradhan’s resignation as only the beginning of a broader campaign for accountability.

Government data showed youth unemployment among people aged 15 to 29 increased to 16.2% in June. A 2026 study by Azim Premji University also found that fewer than 7% of graduates secured permanent salaried jobs within a year.

Protesters Remain Cautious

Despite celebrating the minister’s resignation, activists fear legal action against demonstrators. Police have filed cases against more than 100 protesters and arrested over 40 people on various charges.

Human rights groups have also expressed concern over the treatment of activists and peaceful demonstrators. Protesters insist they will continue demanding reforms, arguing that the issues behind the movement remain unresolved.
