Saudi Nuclear cooperation entered a new phase on Wednesday after the United States and Saudi Arabia signed a landmark civil nuclear agreement designed to deepen energy ties, strengthen nuclear security and expand long-term commercial cooperation.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman signed the peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement, commonly known as a 123 Agreement, along with a bilateral safeguards agreement, the US Department of Energy announced.

According to the department, the agreements establish the legal framework for a decades-long, multi-billion-dollar partnership that will expand commercial ties, enhance energy cooperation and support global nuclear nonproliferation objectives.

The agreements also provide American companies with greater access to Saudi Arabia’s civil nuclear energy programme, creating new business opportunities while supporting US workers, manufacturers and supply chains.

The US Department of Energy said the partnership will help Saudi Arabia meet its growing energy needs while reinforcing high standards of nuclear safety, security and nonproliferation.

Officials added that the agreements strengthen the United States’ competitive position in the global civil nuclear technology market and promote regional security through responsible nuclear cooperation.

“This reflects our two nations’ shared commitment to strengthening US-Saudi commercial relations, delivering prosperity at home and security to our allies abroad,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said after the signing ceremony.

He also said the agreements uphold the highest standards of nuclear safety and nonproliferation while relying on advanced American nuclear technology and scientific expertise.

According to the Energy Department, the partnership is expected to increase US nuclear technology exports, generate high-paying jobs in the United States, strengthen energy and national security, reinforce international nonproliferation standards and deepen the long-standing strategic relationship between Washington and Riyadh.

The agreement will now move to the US Congress for review before it can formally enter into force.

The deal marks a significant step in expanding bilateral cooperation as both countries seek to strengthen strategic, economic and energy ties through long-term investment in civil nuclear technology.
