President Zardari Orders Nationwide Monsoon Preparedness as Flood Risks Increase

Monsoon preparedness moved to the forefront on Thursday as President Asif Ali Zardari instructed federal, provincial and local authorities to strengthen coordinated rescue, relief and emergency response measures amid growing risks of flash floods, landslides and urban flooding across Pakistan.

In a statement, President Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction of homes, infrastructure and property caused by recent monsoon rains. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with everyone affected by the severe weather.

The president directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local administrations to maintain close coordination and ensure the timely issuance of early weather warnings.

He instructed authorities to continuously monitor rainfall, river flows and water levels, particularly in the upper catchment areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), while urging downstream districts to complete advance preparations for possible flooding.

President Zardari also ordered disaster management agencies to pre-position rescue teams, relief supplies and emergency equipment in vulnerable areas to ensure a rapid response if conditions worsen.

He called for stronger measures to protect vulnerable communities, safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure the safety of tourists and visitors travelling to regions at risk of flash floods, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and landslides.

The president stressed that all relevant institutions must remain on high alert and respond immediately wherever lives or property face danger.

He also urged citizens to follow official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel to areas affected by heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides and other weather-related hazards.

President Zardari praised the dedication of rescue workers and emergency personnel involved in relief operations and prayed for the safety and well-being of people across the country as Pakistan enters a critical phase of the monsoon season.
