Hollywood actress Amanda Seyfried has revealed why she turned down the role of Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, saying she feared the film could negatively affect her acting career.

During a career retrospective with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the 40-year-old actress recalled her doubts about the superhero film, which was released in 2014. Zoe Saldaña ultimately played Gamora.

“I think turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was just so obvious to me at the time,” Seyfried said.

She explained that the film’s unusual characters made her question whether it would succeed at the box office.

“I’m like, ‘This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other.’ And I was just like, ‘This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad,’” she recalled.

Although Seyfried acknowledged that her prediction was wrong, she said she still stood by her decision to decline the role.

The actress explained that her choice reflected her personal priorities and her plans to start a family, rather than her career ambitions alone.

“I mean, obviously I was wrong. But I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have,” she said.

Guardians of the Galaxy went on to become a successful Marvel film, establishing a popular franchise featuring a team of unconventional heroes.

Physical Demands of Superhero Films

Seyfried also cited the physical demands of superhero productions as another reason for turning down the part.

She said she disliked spending long periods in makeup trailers, performing stunts and working at heights.

When asked whether she would consider appearing in a superhero movie in the future, the actress gave a humorous response.

“No, unless the superhero’s just, you know, walkin’ a lot,” she said.

Seyfried has previously expressed a preference for roles centred on realistic human interactions. She has described those performances as more fulfilling than the demands of large-scale superhero productions.
