Karachi Court Rejects Iqrarul Hassan’s Bail Plea in Anti-State Content Case

KARACHI, October 22, 2026: A Karachi court has rejected journalist and television presenter Iqrarul Hassan’s bail application in a case involving allegations of disseminating anti-state content and undermining national integrity.

The District and Sessions Court East also dismissed a petition challenging Hassan’s physical remand, according to reports. His defence counsel questioned the legality of the proceedings, arguing that the allegations involved digital content and cybercrime matters.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) registered the case against Hassan, who is currently in jail on judicial remand.

Court Proceedings and Remand

Last week, the NCCIA produced Hassan before a judicial magistrate, who granted four days of physical remand for investigation.

On October 17, the court extended the physical remand by two days. It rejected an application filed by Hassan’s lawyers and directed the agency to submit a report at the next hearing.

The latest ruling marks another development in the legal proceedings against the journalist. Further details of the court’s reasoning on the bail application should be confirmed from the written order.

What the FIR Alleges

The case was registered under Sections 9, 10, 20, 24 and 26-A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

According to the first information report (FIR), Hassan allegedly used his personal accounts on X, Instagram and Facebook to disseminate content described as false, fabricated, anti-state and defamatory.

The FIR alleges that the posts sought to provoke the public against the state, its institutions and their officials. It further claims that the content portrayed state institutions and functionaries in a false and distorted manner.

The document also alleges that Hassan presented lawful measures as controversial to incite public opposition to state authorities.

According to the FIR, the journalist had a substantial following across the platforms. It claims that his publicly accessible posts could reach audiences throughout Pakistan and abroad.

These allegations remain claims made in the case and have not been established by a court verdict.

Wife Alleges He Was Taken From Lahore Home

Hassan’s wife, Farah Iqrar, told The Express Tribune on October 12 that unidentified individuals posing as NCCIA officials had allegedly taken him from their residence in Lahore’s Defence C area.

She said between five and seven people, including women, arrived at the house late on Sunday night, during the intervening hours of Sunday and Monday. According to Farah, the visitors demanded that Hassan come outside and threatened to break down the door if he was not handed over.

She alleged that the group entered the house, forcibly took the journalist from a room and removed him from the premises.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari later said Punjab Police had not arrested Hassan. She added that an investigation was underway and that his family would be informed once officials obtained verified information about his whereabouts.

Hours before the reported incident, Hassan had posted a message on X criticising the Pakistan Peoples Party and referring to Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.

The case has drawn attention to the allegations against the journalist, the circumstances surrounding his reported removal from his Lahore residence and the ongoing legal proceedings in Karachi.
