Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that US President Donald Trump would receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in promoting peace in South Asia. However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced South African judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay as this year’s laureate on Friday.
The committee honoured Pillay, 85, for her efforts to promote peace and international law.
In a post on X, Shehbaz credited Trump’s intervention with helping ease tensions between Pakistan and India.
The prime minister said Trump’s “timely intervention helped bring Pakistan and India back from the brink and secure a ceasefire, that is holding till today.”
Shehbaz added that Pakistan had nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his contribution.
“We sincerely hope President’s efforts to promote peace and prevent conflict in our region receive due recognition this time,” the prime minister wrote.
Pakistan announced its decision to recommend Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on June 21, 2025.

The government cited his role in helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India. The announcement followed days of military exchanges between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The ceasefire took effect on May 10, 2025. Trump said the United States had helped mediate the agreement.
He later claimed that trade pressure also helped bring the countries towards an understanding.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
In January 2026, Machado presented her physical medal to Trump during a meeting at the White House. She described the gesture as recognition of his support for the Venezuelan people.
Trump thanked Machado for the gesture.
However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified that transferring a medal does not transfer the Nobel Peace Prize itself. The award remains linked to the original laureate.
Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his involvement in resolving international conflicts.
On October 8, he told reporters that he believed his efforts merited recognition. However, he acknowledged uncertainty about the committee’s decision.
“They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me,” Trump said.
He also referred to Machado’s presentation of the medal, saying he felt honoured by the gesture.
