Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has launched an Advanced Mobile Gas Leak Detection System (AMGLDS) to improve gas safety, reduce losses and support environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance.
SSGC said the technology will help teams detect gas leaks early and respond quickly across its distribution network.
The company described itself as Pakistan’s first gas utility to deploy the advanced mobile detection system.
SSGC held a formal launch and handover ceremony at its Learning and Development Centre at the Karachi Terminal facility.
SSGC Managing Director Amin Rajput attended the ceremony as chief guest.
Senior management, executives and business partners also attended the event. Rajput formally launched the system through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The company also handed over the system’s custodianship from its R&D Project Department to the General Managers of the Distribution Division.
Rajput described the launch as a major milestone for SSGC and Pakistan’s energy sector.
He said the technology would strengthen safety, environmental protection and digital operations.
The system can detect very small gas leaks, allowing field teams to address problems before they become public safety hazards.
Rajput said SSGC aims to move from reactive maintenance to a more proactive asset integrity model.
He also linked the project to the company’s efforts to reduce methane emissions and improve ESG performance.
“Energy delivery and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand,” Rajput said.
He also praised the management, R&D and operations teams for completing the project.
SSGC DMD-Operations Saeed Rizvi described AMGLDS as a major technological upgrade for field operations.
He said the system would change how SSGC teams inspect, detect, diagnose and repair leaks across the distribution network.
According to Rizvi, each unit uses ABB technology and can detect gas concentrations at parts-per-billion (PPB) levels.
The system also uses algorithms to identify the location of gas leaks and estimate their flow rates.
This data will help SSGC prioritise repairs based on leak volume and severity.
Rizvi also acknowledged the efforts of the project team and other departments involved in the implementation.
Project Lead and R&D Head Muhammad Ali Shah presented the project’s development journey.
He explained how the company moved from the initial concept to implementation.
Shah also highlighted system customisation for Pakistan’s operating environment.
SSGC later recognised engineers, project team members, the project lead and the OEM partner for their contributions.
The company presented commemorative shields to those involved in the project.
SSGC said the new system will support safer operations, lower gas losses and stronger environmental performance across its distribution network.
