Dawlance Climate Secretary Reviews Shift to Ozone-Safe Refrigerator Manufacturing

Federal Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination (MoCC) Awais Manzur Sumra visited Dawlance’s DPL1 manufacturing facility in Karachi on September 24 to review the company’s transition to climate-friendly refrigerant and insulation technologies.

The visit focused on Pakistan’s efforts to protect the ozone layer and reduce climate-warming emissions. It also highlighted the industrial sector’s role in meeting the country’s environmental commitments under the Montreal Protocol.

Government Delegation Visits Plant

The secretary was accompanied by Dr Zaigham Abbas, Deputy Director (Labs/NEQs) at the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA).

Syed Azmat Hussain Shah, Interim National Project Manager at the National Ozone Unit (NOU), MoCC, also joined the delegation. Muhammad Zia Ul Mustafa, Deputy Director (Admin), Pak-EPA, Islamabad, was part of the delegation as well.

During the visit, Dawlance briefed the officials on its manufacturing processes and environmental initiatives.

Dawlance Adopts Cyclopentane Technology

The delegation focused on Dawlance’s conversion to cyclopentane technology. The company carried out the project with financial and technical support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the National Ozone Unit.

Cyclopentane serves as an insulation foam agent in refrigerators and freezers. It has zero ozone-depleting potential and a very low global warming potential compared with the chemicals it replaces.

The delegation reviewed the project as an example of cooperation between the government, international development partners and the private sector.

Company Highlights Sustainability Plans

Dawlance CEO Umar Ahsan Khan said sustainability has become a responsibility for manufacturers.

“Our transition to cyclopentane shows what Pakistani industry can achieve when government, international partners and the private sector work towards a shared goal,” he said.

Khan also thanked the Ministry of Climate Change, the National Ozone Unit and UNIDO for their support.

He added that Dawlance would continue investing in cleaner technologies and energy-efficient appliances. The company also plans to strengthen responsible manufacturing practices across its operations.

Focus on Climate and Resource Efficiency

During a detailed briefing, Dawlance explained the environmental impact of refrigerants. The company also outlined measures supporting Pakistan’s phase-down of ozone-depleting and high-global-warming-potential substances.

The presentation covered Dawlance’s wider sustainability programme across its manufacturing facilities. Key areas included emissions reduction, energy efficiency and resource conservation.

Dawlance reaffirmed its commitment to Pakistan’s climate and environmental objectives. The company said it would continue supporting responsible refrigerant transitions and sustainable manufacturing.
