Facebook and Instagram Recover After Brief US Outage

Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms recovered after a short service disruption affected users across the United States.

The outage began at around 8:55 p.m. ET, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.

Reports of problems on Facebook climbed above 17,000 at the peak of the disruption.

Instagram recorded more than 5,000 outage reports during the same period.

Downdetector tracks service disruptions through reports from users and other sources.

The number of reports fell sharply by about 10 p.m. ET.

The decline suggested that both platforms had largely restored their services.

Some users faced difficulties with the platforms while the disruption lasted.

Meta had not immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment.

The company did not provide a reason for the outage in the information available.

Downdetector figures do not represent an exact count of affected users.

The actual number of people who experienced problems may differ because the data comes from user-submitted reports.

Facebook and Instagram Faced Similar Outage in July

Meta’s platforms have faced service disruptions before.

Facebook and Instagram experienced a similar outage in July.

Downdetector recorded as many as 4,808 reports of problems on Facebook during that incident.

Instagram recorded up to 2,829 reports at the time.

The latest disruption produced a much higher number of reports at its peak.

Both services later returned to normal operation.
