KARACHI, September 8, 2026: The Department of Chemistry at the University of Karachi has inaugurated two modern laboratories to improve practical education and research opportunities for students.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Tuesday and was led by KU Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Dr Bilquees Gul.

The new facilities include an Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory and an Analytical Chemistry Laboratory. The Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory has been dedicated to Shahid Ahmed, a distinguished alumnus from the 1973 batch and former faculty member.

The Analytical Chemistry Laboratory has been named after Maryam Darsot, a former student of the department and the spouse of Shahid Ahmed.

Modern Labs to Support Practical Education

Speakers at the ceremony highlighted the importance of modern laboratory facilities for chemistry students.

Tasneem Ilyas told students that the new laboratories meet contemporary academic requirements. She said the facilities would provide greater opportunities for practical training and research.

She also stressed the importance of chemical safety. Students must understand the correct use, storage and handling of chemicals.

Certain chemicals can pose serious risks to human health and safety. Therefore, students need proper training before working with potentially hazardous substances.

Alumni Highlight Hard Work and Determination

Former teachers and alumni from the Chemistry Department’s 1973 class encouraged students to remain committed to their goals.

They said talented students may face difficulties during their professional journeys. However, temporary challenges should not stop them from progressing.

Speakers urged students to remain confident and avoid considering themselves inferior to others. They emphasised dedication, perseverance and consistency as key factors in achieving success.

They also highlighted the achievements of Chemistry Department graduates abroad. According to the speakers, alumni are contributing professionally in countries including the United States and Canada.

KU Dean Calls for Effective Use of Facilities

Professor Dr Bilquees Gul said all stakeholders have a role in creating better opportunities for students.

She welcomed the establishment of laboratories that meet modern academic requirements. She also urged students to use the facilities effectively.

The dean said students should develop their skills and use their knowledge to benefit their department, university and country.

Professor Dr Saleem Akhtar of the University of Bahrain also addressed the students. He said professional achievements are linked to hard work and the guidance received from teachers.

He encouraged students to share their knowledge with others. He noted that knowledge grows when people pass it on.

Alumni Support Praised by Chemistry Department

Professor Ejaz Ahmed Faruqi, President of Unikarian, said modern laboratories would provide students with better opportunities for research and practical education.

He described such facilities as an important need for contemporary education. He also stressed the importance of giving back to one’s alma mater.

Faculty member Dr Mohsin Ali said success should not be measured only by personal advancement. He said helping others progress is also an important measure of achievement.

Professor Dr Nasreen Fatima, Chairperson of the KU Department of Chemistry, praised the continued support of the 1973 alumni batch.

She said alumni have contributed to departmental development projects and scholarships for deserving students.

According to Professor Fatima, alumni support for their alma mater is commendable. She said it also provides an inspiring example for younger generations.
