KSE-100 Falls Over 1,000 Points as Oil Prices and Hormuz Tensions Hit PSX

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) faced renewed selling pressure on Monday as rising oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions dragged the benchmark KSE-100 index lower.

The KSE-100 started the session on a weaker note. It dropped 429.59 points, or 0.25%, to 174,899.23 at 9:39am.

The index later moved between an intraday high of 175,353.67 and a low of 174,313.12.

Broad-Based Selling Hits Key Sectors

Selling affected several major sectors during the session.

Oil marketing companies, automobile assemblers, cement companies, commercial banks and refineries came under pressure.

Trading activity remained strong despite the decline. Around 100.91 million shares changed hands by midday, while the traded value reached approximately Rs5.87 billion.

Pakistan’s Export Industries Face Rising Pressure to Go Green

The KSE-100 had closed the previous session at 175,328.82.

The broad-based selling reflected growing investor caution as external risks increased.

Rising Oil Prices Add to Market Pressure

International oil prices also added to the pressure on Pakistani stocks.

Oil prices rose by more than $1 a barrel on Monday as tensions involving the United States and Iran increased concerns about disruptions to Middle Eastern energy supplies.

The latest developments around the Strait of Hormuz have increased uncertainty across global energy markets.

Iran has also indicated plans to announce a restricted zone in the Gulf. Tehran said it would provide maps for a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.

The developments followed a weekend exchange of strikes involving vessels and further raised concerns about energy shipments.

Pakistan Faces Higher Import and Inflation Risks

Higher oil prices carry significant implications for Pakistan.

The country relies heavily on imported energy, making international crude prices an important factor for its import bill and external financing needs.

More expensive oil can also increase inflationary pressure. At the corporate level, higher energy and transportation costs can affect profit margins across several industries.

Investors therefore remain alert to changes in global oil prices and developments around the Strait of Hormuz.

Geopolitical Risks Keep Investors Cautious

The KSE-100 decline reflected several pressures at the same time.

Geopolitical uncertainty increased risk across global markets. Higher oil prices added pressure to Pakistan’s economic outlook. Meanwhile, investors took profits across several major sectors.

The combination kept sentiment cautious during Monday’s trading session.

Market participants will likely continue watching oil prices, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and Pakistan’s external financing position for further direction.
