he Government of Japan has approved a grant of up to $55,734 (Rs15.5 million) to help a local NGO purchase a new school bus for special students in Karachi.

The grant comes under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi signed the grant contract with the Institute of Behavioral Psychology (IBP) School of Special Education on Thursday.

Japan’s Consul General in Karachi, HATTORI Masaru, signed the agreement with IBP President Habiba Habib at the Consulate-General.

The new bus will allow an additional 30 students to access quality education, vocational training and specialised therapeutic services. It will also provide safe door-to-door transport for students with psychological and physical challenges.

Many students currently face difficulties reaching the school because of long and challenging travel arrangements. The new transport service will help remove one of the key barriers to their education.

The project will also support the families of the students. Parents and other family members will have greater opportunities to pursue socio-economic activities while their children attend school.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Consul General HATTORI said he hoped the GGP assistance would create substantial social benefits and support long-term economic development through the IBP School of Special Education.

The Government of Japan said it would continue supporting local NGOs in Pakistan through flexible and timely grant assistance aimed at improving people’s social well-being.
