Governor Nehal Hashmi Launches ‘Pakistan Hamesha Zindabad’ Independence Day Celebrations With Tree Plantation Drive

Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi officially launched the province’s Independence Day 2026 celebrations on Saturday by planting a sapling at the Governor House in Karachi, marking the beginning of a 14-day programme under the theme “Pakistan Hamesha Zindabad.”

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the governor said the theme reflects Pakistan’s commitment to national unity, patriotism, solidarity, and the country’s security and stability. He said the celebrations would demonstrate that the nation stands united with its Armed Forces, state institutions, and national interests. He added that people from every segment of society, including youth, women, teachers, doctors, engineers, journalists, and senior citizens, remain committed to Pakistan’s development and prosperity.

More than 100 words into the ceremony, Independence Day celebrations also highlighted environmental responsibility through the launch of a tree plantation campaign. Governor Nehal Hashmi said the initiative underscores the importance of trees for environmental protection, human well-being, and future generations. Referring to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he noted that planting trees is a noble act and stressed the need for greater afforestation as Pakistan faces growing climate challenges, including extreme heat, heavy rainfall, floods, and rapid urbanisation.

The governor also announced that Dr. Saif-ur-Rehman has assumed charge as Principal Secretary to the Governor of Sindh. He said Dr. Saif-ur-Rehman has extensive experience in developing urban forests and revealed that a modern urban forest is being established within the Governor House premises. The project is expected to develop into a lush green space over the coming year and serve as an environmental legacy for future generations.

Governor Nehal Hashmi said leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), along with political and social representatives, would actively promote tree plantation and afforestation throughout the Independence Day celebrations, describing trees as symbols of peace, prosperity, and life.

Announcing the schedule of events, the governor said outstanding university students will receive laptops on August 3. A special educational programme on August 6 will educate schoolchildren about the Pakistan Movement, the creation of Pakistan, and the role of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Students will also visit Quaid-e-Azam House and watch a documentary on the country’s independence movement.

A grand Mushaira focusing on patriotism, the freedom movement, and national history is scheduled for August 8, while a programme dedicated to female students on August 10 will highlight the contributions of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and her role in Pakistan’s independence movement.

National Minorities Day will be observed on August 11 to recognise the contributions of minority communities to Pakistan’s progress. On August 12, Youth Day will feature speech and debate competitions focusing on independence, national development, and the responsibilities of young Pakistanis.

The governor said the central Independence Day ceremony will take place at Governor House on the evening of August 13. Flag-hoisting ceremonies will be held on August 14 at Governor House, Mazar-e-Quaid, and other locations across Karachi.

Highlighting Pakistan’s national journey, Governor Nehal Hashmi said the country was founded through the sacrifices of its founding leadership under Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and continues to move forward with strength and stability. Referring to recent tensions with India, he praised the Armed Forces under Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and acknowledged Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

Concluding his address, the governor reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace, mutual respect, and the principle of “Live and Let Live,” while stressing that the country will continue to safeguard its independence, sovereignty, and national dignity.
