KARACHI: Iran has said it will stop its military attacks as long as the United States continues to suspend its airstrikes, according to a senior Iranian official who spoke to Reuters on Sunday.

The statement came after the United States paused its bombing campaign following 13 consecutive nights of airstrikes. US President Donald Trump’s advisers reportedly recommended the pause after warning that the military was running out of planned targets and risking a depletion of key weapons.

No US airstrikes were reported on Saturday or Sunday. Iran also refrained from launching retaliatory attacks during the same period after previously responding each night to US strikes by targeting neighboring countries hosting American military bases.

The Iranian official said Tehran’s position remains based on reciprocity.

“If the attacks stop, Iran will also halt its operations. That message has already been conveyed to the United States,” the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said President Trump ordered the pause to create space for diplomatic efforts.

“He’s giving talks some space. He’s giving it a little bit of room,” Waltz said during interviews with US media.

According to a US official, military planners advised that two weeks of airstrikes had largely exhausted the list of pre-selected targets linked to Iranian threats against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The official added that General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, privately warned President Trump that resuming large-scale operations could strain US weapons stockpiles, including air defense interceptors deployed in the Middle East.

The Pentagon and US Central Command declined to comment on internal military advice.

During an interview with NBC, Waltz said the US military had the resources it needed. However, he acknowledged that the current administration inherited depleted military stockpiles.

Despite the pause, Tehran remains cautious. The Iranian official said many leaders believe the suspension is tactical rather than a genuine shift toward diplomacy.

“There is more skepticism than optimism about the halt in attacks,” the official said, adding that Iran remains wary because of its previous experiences with the United States.

The recent conflict has centered on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. The waterway handles about one-fifth of global oil trade, making stability in the region critical for international energy markets.

Media reports said President Trump’s decision followed a high-level meeting in which senior military and political advisers questioned the effectiveness of continuing the bombing campaign. Some officials reportedly favored giving diplomacy another opportunity before considering further military action.

Meanwhile, many Iranians remain uncertain about what comes next. A Tehran businessman told Reuters that the temporary pause has done little to ease public anxiety.

“Everyone in the country is stuck in limbo,” he said. “Trump is playing games with Iran. It’s exhausting.”
